Except for some of the fancy-shmancy show dogs, I’d say dogs have more humility than humans. There are a few other things dogs do better than humans but the one thing we do MUCH better is giving.
Dogs give because it makes their heart pump happy-fast. They don’t give with any concern about what they will receive in return. Giving isn’t an asset to trade on the stock market. It’s a spirit that floats from heart to heart. I met a tree that was good at giving like a dog. Ironically (or not) it was called The Giving Tree and some famous writer named Shel Silverstein wrote all about it in a little book that Jet read to me. You can order it at the link below.
Jet says that she gives the book (as a gift) to more adults than she does to children (though it was written by a children’s author). It’s a simple story with only a few powerful words on each page. Nokona (my little dog pal) really liked the pictures. He’s still trying to figure out the message behind the words. As for me, I got it.
So here’s the lesson of the day… The Giving Tree provides a priceless insight that every human needs to remember and all dogs already know: only through giving are we truly living.

Okay, here’s the question of the day from Skitter who asked: Why do humans need a holiday to take time off and play?
Dear Skitter:
It’s perplexing. Humans, known for being so intelligent, can really be… dense sometimes. It makes no sense that a date on a calendar suddenly becomes a new type of day just because it’s called a “holiday” and that once it has a new name, it has a new purpose: to play. Skitter, I don’t have an answer for you. All I can say is, try to put the holiday spirit in every day (dogs are good at this) and maybe your humans will catch on that every day can be a holiday.
