Jet (my foster mom) told me about an old Antonio Banderas movie called the 13th Warrior. Jet says he (Antonio) is cute. Dogs don’t care about humans being cute for them; they care about humans being loving to them.
Any whooo, she tells me the movie is about Banderas (an Arabian) who joins Norse Vikings to fight half man-half bear like creatures called Wendol. Sometimes, based on what I was getting from the story, the Norse lost battles with these guys because they were so afraid of their enemy.
I was confused. If the Norse were just as fast, just as strong, just as skilled, then why did their fear overcome them in battle? Jet says it’s because the Wendol had an intimidating (word of the day) half-beast look that scared their enemies. I checked out the Wendol’s image (see below) and they are scary looking bad guys.
In the end Banderas reveals the Wendol for what they really are: just men in ugly costumes. Once this occurs, he and his fellow good guys can attack the enemy with confidence.
Sometimes dogs experience a similar situation. In this situation humans who don’t like pets use loud, angry language to intimidate dogs. We become frightened instead of confident. Just as fear makes it hard for warriors to have the confidence to fight, it also makes it hard for dogs to have the confidence that makes us look good for adoption.
So, here’s my lesson of the day… Whether you’re a dog or a human, it’s important to know what you’re REALLY fighting: a foe or just your own fear.
Okay, here’s the question of the day from Digger who asked: My teeth hurt. One of them even bleeds a little when I eat. What do I need to do?
Dear Digger:
First, run to your humans and get them to take you to the vet to see your teeth. You may need some dental work. Bad teeth often result from infected gums and this is VERY dangerous for dogs. Once the vet has you better, teach your humans how to brush your teeth. My humans use poultry (just a fancy name for chicken) flavored dog toothpaste. I love it. And, my teeth and gums feel great.
