One of my fans wrote in today with a charming story about some little ducks (and their mom) who got stuck in their apartment swimming pool. (Photo below.)
Essentially, the babies hatched nearby and the mother duck led each baby over to the pool and nudged them in the water. The entire idea seemed perfect for the entire family. What the momma duck didn’t realize is that the babies were too tiny to get OUT of the pool on their own. The pool water line is too low and there is no underwater step high enough for the babies to use.
Most humans don’t realize it but baby ducks can drown. They must have a way to get out and rest. My foster mom (Jet) started working on a rescue service for the ducks while the apartment manager and her team focused on placing a makeshift bridge (bricks) on the pool steps so that the babies could get out of the pool. Whew! Makes a dog hungry just thinking about all this stuff.
I offered to “help” with the baby ducks by nipping at their tiny tail ends but Jet didn’t think my ‘support’ was needed. Imagine that.
This brings me to my point of the day.
Humans and dogs (as well as other creatures) face obstacles like this every day. What you do to overcome these barriers says everything about who you really are. (At least that’s what Jet says.) Do you take action and help out others facing a roadblock? If you are facing a barrier, do you wimp out and give up or rise up to the challenge and figure out a way around it?
Jet says her biggest challenge is the same as the ducks. Huh? Specifically, she notes, sometimes you need help to overcome some of life’s barriers to success.
Humans! Take a look around and see where you can be of help. It may be something simple (like enabling baby ducks to get out of a pool) or planting flowers for an elderly neighbor. Pitch in.
Okay, here’s the question of the day from Bijon (bee-jhan) who asked: How can I get my parents to remember that dogs have very sensitive ears? They play the TV really loud and it hurts.
Dear Bijon:
There are ear patches that humans can wear. (See photo below) Humans also have a tiny thing called a hearing aid. When the TV is too loud, I cover my ears with my paws. On the other hand, leaving the room works too.
